The image of the Air Force Reserve as an organization that knows how to take care of its people has been earned. Through a competent support staff and state-of-the-art computer systems, the Reserve attempts to accommodate the needs of its members. Anyone 18 or older may join the Air Force Reserve. Those who are 17 can join with consent from parents or guardians.
Unlike the Air Force, those who join the Reserve select where they wish to live and that is where they serve. Reservists are not transferred from location to location unless they wish to be.
Typically, Reservists serve one weekend a month and are on temporary duty two weeks of the year. The job assigned to each Reservist depends, to some degree, on the results of the ASVAB test. While there is no high school diploma or GED requirement, those without either must score higher on the ASVAB test.
In addition to a paycheck for this part-time job, the benefits are exceptional, especially in the area of educational opportunities. Reservists receive a paycheck and on-the-job training and still have the time to pursue their education or a civilian career.
New Reservists with no prior military experience will go to Basic Military Training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, for 8 1/2 weeks. There are physical qualifications for Basic Military Training and suggested exercises to get in shape.
